Competition Structure

Swimming Queensland's competition structure is designated according to SQ's Competition Framework and Minimum Program Requirements. An outline on both of these can be found in the links below. There are also some differences in swim meet designations across different regions, which is outlined below.

Brisbane Region

There are three levels of meets within the Brisbane Region. These are A-Grade, Development and Introductory Meets.

A Grade Meets (major qualifying meets)

Times: Times may be used to qualify for all meets

Programming: Must satisfy SQ Minimum Program Requirements for Regional Championships & A Grade Meets, including splitting sessions - i.e. if meet is likely to exceed 3 hours, it must be divided into sessions.

Scheduling: To be run on weekends designated by SQ

Officiating: SQ will provide a minimum of a Referee, Starter & Judge of Strokes

Development Meets (all other qualifying meets)

Times: Times may be used to qualify for all meets except Qld and Australian Championships

Programming: Must use SQ supplied, or approved, Program and comply with SQ requirements re splitting sessions - i.e. if meet is likely to exceed 2 hours, it must be divided into sessions. Must include Rule Tolerance events according to the SQ Rule Tolerance Policy.

Scheduling: To be normally run on weekends designated by SQ

Officiating: SQ to provide a minimum of 1 Technical Oficial, who must be capable of refereeing the meet

Introductory Meets (non-qualifying meets)

Times: Times cannot be used to qualify for any meet

Programming: Must include Rule Tolerance events according to the SQ Rule Tolerance Policy & comply with SQ requirements re splitting sessions - i.e. if meet is likely to exceed 1.5 hours, it must be divided into sessions

Scheduling: Can be run on any weekend except during the Qld Championships

Officiating: SQ to provide a minimum of 1 Technical Official to help Club Officials to run the meet

A Grade Meets (major qualifying meets)

A Grade Meets are major qualifying meets

Times: Times may be used to qualify for all meets

Programming: Must satisfy the SQ Minimum Programming Requirements for Regional Championships & A Grade Meets

B Grade Qualifying & Non-Qualifying Meets


B Grade meets do not satisfy the Minimum Program Requirements for Regional Championships & A Grade Meets

Times: If an approved qualifying meet, times may be used to qualify for all meets (only Automatic & Semi-Automatic times are accepted by Swimming Australia)

Restricted Qualifying & Non-Qualifying Meets

Restricted meets are where clubs can compete by invitation only or where special conditions apply to swimmers' eligibility, as per the SQ Competition Framework

Times: If an approved qualifying meet, times may be used to qualify for all meets (only Automatic & Semi-Automatic times accepted by Swimming Australia)

Junior Meets

Junior meets are restricted to children 12yrs & U, as per the SQ Competition Framework

Programming: Must include Rule Tolerance events according to the SQ Rule Tolerance Policy
