It was the Campbell sisters in this morning’s Women’s 50m Freestyle. Swimming in the final portion of the events seeded heats it was Cate Campbell who touched first in 24.40 to qualify second fastest overall, 0.14 seconds behind World Record holder Sarah Sjostrom. 2015 World Champion, Bronte Campbell, placed 2nd in her heat in 24.74 to qualify ninth-fastest through to tonight’s semi-finals.
The Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay stepped up this morning to place first in their heat. With Cam McEvoy leading off to give the team a strong start (48.69), Alex Graham (48.40) held third position at the 50m mark of his leg before passing it to Brianna Throssell who lifted the team into first position with a 53.46 split and Madi Wilson brought it home in 53.22 fighting off the French team who touched 0.50 behind. Team Australia will head into tonight’s final as the second-fastest qualifiers, 1.07 behind Team USA, with Cate Campbell and Kyle Chalmers expected to step up.
Jessica Hansen touched 3rd in her the final seeded heat of the Women’s 50m Breaststroke. Finishing in 30.69, Hansen was 0.51 behind World Record holder USA’s Lilly King and 0.16 behind 2015 silver medallist Alia Atkinson from Jamaica. The 2019 Australian Champion will progress through to finals as the sixth fastest qualifier, swimming out of lane in the first of two semi-finals this evening.
In the Men’s 50m Backstroke Mitch Larkin placed fifth in his heat, in 25.33. At the conclusion of eight heats, Larkin finished in 20th place, missing out on a spot in the semi-finals.
Concluding the morning's program, swimming from lane three Jack McLoughlin touched 8th in his heat, with a time of 15:04.64, to place 16th overall. Missing out on a spot in tomorrow night's final.
The Australian Dolphins Swim Team will compete for medals tonight in the green and gold for the following events:
- Brianna Throssell in the Women’s 50m Butterfly final;
- Matthew Temple in his first World Championship final for the Men’s 100m Butterfly;
- Minna Atherton and Kaylee McKeown in the Women’s 200m Backstroke final; and
- Ariarne Titmus and Kiah Melverton in the Women’s 800m final,
Semi-final action will include:
- Cate and Bronte Campbell in the Women’s 50m Freestyle semi-final; and
- Jessica Hansen in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke semi-final,
Finals this evening will start at 9pm (EST).
