It was all about the medleys on the final morning of swimming at the 18th FINA World Swimming Championships.
Fresh off her silver medal-winning performance in the 200m Backstroke last night, Kaylee McKeown clocked 59.44 in the Backstroke leg of the Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay. Giving Australia the lead, Jess Hansen (1:06.99) powered through her 100m Breaststroke. With Brianna Throssell (58.28) and Madi Wilson (53.48) fighting off the teams from Canada, China, and Great Britain to win the heat in 3:58.19. Moving through to tonight’s final, the last event of the world championships, as the second-fastest qualifier, the women’s team will look to bring in Minna Atherton, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell.
The Men’s 4x100m Medley Relay saw Mitch Larkin, Matt Wilson, Matt Temple and Clyde Lewis place third in their heat, to qualify as the fifth fastest for this evening’s final. 100m Backstroke Bronze medallist Mitch Larkin (53.47) gave the team a lead over Russia and Japan, who placed first and second respectively. Former equal World Record holder Matt Wilson and Dolphin rookie Matt Temple held strong as they pushed Team Australia into second position for the breaststroke and butterfly legs in 59.16 and 51.27 respectively before freestyler Clyde Lewis brought the team home in 48.60 touching third, 1.78 behind Russia.
Thomas Fraser-Holmes dove in for the Men’s 400m IM. The Olympian had a strong butterfly leg, turning first at the 100m mark in 56.99, but it was Arjan Knipping from the Netherlands who touched first in the heat. Touching in 4:16.93, 3.47 seconds behind Knipping, Fraser-Holmes placed 7th in the final heat to finish 10th overall, missing out on a spot in tonight’s final.
The Australian Dolphins Swim Team will compete for medals tonight in the green and gold for the following events:
- Jess Hansen in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke final;
- Cate and Bronte Campbell in the final for the Women’s 50m Freestyle; and
- Team Australia in the Men and Women's events of the 4x100m Medley Relay.
Finals this evening will start at 9pm (EST).
