Vale Dr Simon Hooton

01 February 2022

Swimming Queensland are deeply saddened to report the passing of Dr Simon Hooton on Monday, 31 January after a lengthy illness.  It was just last week that we proudly announced Simon’s inclusion in the Australia Day 2022 Honour’s List as a recipient of the Order of Australia Medal for service to swimming and the community.

As we stated at that time, Simon’s service to swimming began in the early 1980s at the Gladstone South Swimming Club.  Over the ensuing four decades, he performed multiple roles, including swimming club President, Swimming Queensland Board member, and Level 3 Australian Referee, with one of his most important contributions being the mentoring and training of officials across Queensland.  Simon displayed exceptional dedication and leadership at all times, characterised by impeccable integrity, compassion and patience and an easy-going, inclusive style.  In short, he was a great man.

Simon was appointed a Life Member of SQ in 2011 and inducted into SQ’s Hall of Fame in 2015.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to Simon’s wife, Judy, and to the rest of his family.
