Opportunities

As a coach in Queensland, you have the chance to gain professional development through attending activities on offer throughout the year. While some of these target specific groups of coaches, there are others that are open to all accredited coaches.

Where relevant, selection criteria will be published below and you may be contacted directly if you have been selected to attend a specific activity. Keep your eyes on this page to keep up to date with what is happening and opportunities to improve your coaching skills!

To understand how athletes are selected for our Swimming Queensland McDonald’s Development Squads and Queensland Teams, check out our Squads & Teams page.

  • Swimming Queensland McDonald’s Development Squads
  • Our Development Program booklet outlines what activities are available to athletes and coaches in Swimming Queensland McDonald’s Development Squads, so make sure you take the time to read through and save the date for anything you can attend.

  • Queensland Teams and Camps
  • Each season there are a range of Queensland Teams selected that may travel on camps or attend interstate or international meets. Coaches are selected on these teams based on selection criteria, which is made available in the months leading up to the event.

    You can find out what Teams and Camps are happening this season here.

  • Regional Development Clinics
  • Each season, Swimming Queensland’s Club and Coach Development Officers work closely with each region in planning and delivering development activities throughout Queensland.

    Some of these are targeted to certain levels of athletes, but accredited coaches are invited and encouraged to attend to further their learning.  You may also be approached to help deliver and lead regional clinics, which is a great way to expand your knowledge and develop skills working with different athletes.

    For details on what is planned in your region, contact them directly.

  • Coach Workshops
  • Accredited coaches are invited to attend educational workshops, which are conducted at the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS).

    Previous workshops have covered topics such as:

    • Season planning;

    • Strength and conditioning;

    • Biomechanics; and

    • Technical skills e.g. the importance of a start.

    These workshops are facilitated by a panel of industry-experts and are filmed with a live-feed for regional coaches where possible. Keep your contact details up to date with ascta so you don’t miss out on the opportunity to attend upcoming workshops!

  • Coach Scholarships
  • Paulus Wildeboer Coach Scholarship

    The Paulus Wildeboer Coach Scholarship is a Swimming Queensland initiative, which provides coaching development opportunities and an exceptional chance to further your education and network.

    The scholarship application criteria differs each year as the scholarship opportunity changes to cater to a variety of coaching levels and experiences. Previous recipients have travelled to the World Championships in Hungary in 2017 and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

    Swimming Queensland will publish the scholarship details including selection criteria and how to apply below as well as via email. Make sure you keep your contact details up to date with ascta so you don’t miss out on the opportunity!

  • Coach Recognition
  • Swimming Queensland and asctaQLD recognise and reward Queensland coaches for their achievements throughout the season at their annual awards event held during the McDonald’s Queensland Championships.

    Awards are based on performances of your athletes. You will receive an invitation directly to attend this event.

    Coaches may also receive recognition through Swimming Australia’s annual awards gala and the ascta awards held at their national conference each year. Be sure to check their individual websites for more information on upcoming events and previous recipients.

  • Coach Conferences
  • As the national body for coach education and accreditation, ascta host an annual conference each year, usually held in early May. This is a great opportunity to network, learn and develop your skills as a coach. The ascta website will provide details about dates, location and what exciting presentations are available!
