It was another champagne night for Queensland on day five of the 20th World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka with two gold and a silver as the Dolphins continued their march to their best ever performance – taking their gold medal total to nine.
It was gold in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay to a quartet from St Peters Western (Coach: Dean Boxall) Mollie O’Callaghan, Ariarne Titmus, Shayna Jack and Brianna Throssell and gold to Kaylee McKeown (Griffith University; Coach Michael Bohl) in the 50m backstroke – adding to her 100m title and a sterling silver to Lizzy Dekkers (Chandler; Vince Raleigh).
Queensland swimmers have now won five individual gold medals to Ariarne Titmus (Women’s 400m freestyle); Sam Short (Men’s 400m freestyle); Mollie O’Callaghan (Women’s 200m freestyle) and Kaylee McKeown (50, 100m backstroke).
With last night’s remarkable triumph for Australia’s premier club, St Peters Western under coach Boxall – in what swimming historians believe is the first club team to win a relay world championship.
