Queensland pair Flynn Southam (Bond Swimming) and Jaclyn Barclay (St Peters Western) have won Australia’s first gold medals of the World Junior Swimming Championships on a spectacular day two for Australia in Netanya, Israel overnight.

Southam struck gold in the 200m freestyle in 1:46.67 and was joined on the podium by Chandler’s Anders McAlpine (1:47.94) in a 1-3 finish for Australia.

It was the Queensland pairs second medal in two days after helping Australia to silver behind the USA in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay with fellow Queenslander Ed Sommerville (Brisbane Grammar) and Marcus da Silva (Cranbrook, NSW).

Barclay won her gold medal in the women’s 100m backstroke clocking a personal best time of 59.47 (7thfastest All Time Australian) in a stirring 1-2 finish for Australia, which saw Iona Anderson (Breakers, WA) take out the silver, also in a pb of 59.88.

In a night to remember for Barclay, she also joined Sommerville and a third Queenslander Gideon Burnes(Bond Swimming) along with Isabella Boyd, Nunawading, VIC to win silver in the Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay.

Burnes had earlier in the night finished equal sixth in the men’s 100m breaststroke final in 1:01.98.

Day one had also seen Australia take a close-up silver in the Women’s 4x200m freestyle – the US foursome out-touching the Australians by just 0.20 with Queensland girls Jamie Perkins (St Peters Western, QLD), Hannah Casey (Marist College Ashgrove) and Amelia Weber (St Peters Western, QLD) joined by Jamie de Lutiis (Wests Illawarra, NSW) to produce a stellar effort to take out the silver.

Weber was also ninth in the women’s 800m freestyle in 8:40.18, while Enoch Robb (All Saints, QLD) was sixth in the men’s 100m backstroke in 54.75.
