Queensland Girl Power Shines Through at Commonwealth Youth Games

It was a case of Queensland girl power when Mikayla Bird, Zoe Ammundsen and Hannah Allen added a golden glow to Australia’s Commonwealth Youth Games medal tally in Trinbago.

Of the 20 medals (seven gold; six silver and seven bronze) won by the 12-strong swimming team, Queensland swimmers contributed in nine individual events winning four gold, three silver and two bronze as well as playing key roles in all three mixed relays.

Bird (Bond Swimming; Chris Mooney) was the standout, winning seven medals from seven events, coming home with three gold and four bronze medals – including the 100 and 200m butterfly double; Ammundsen winning a gold in the 50m backstroke in new Youth Games record time and her Iona (Zane King) teammate Allen snaring gold in the 800m freestyle.
