It was a night to savour when Queensland born and bred Mollie O’Callaghan (St Peters Western; Dean Boxall) shocked the world and herself to set her first world record on night four of the World Championships in Fukuoka.
Mollie became only the second swimmer in history to break the 1:53 barrier for the 200m freestyle, clocking 1:52.85 to sneak under Italy’s Federica Pellegrini’s 2009 world mark.
And in one of the most remarkable of victories, “Mollie O” swam past her St Peters Western club mate and Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus who touched second in a Queensland 1-2 finish, clocking a personal best of 1:53.01.
It was a stellar night for Queensland swimmers with Sam Short fighting on strongly to add silver (to his 400m freestyle gold) in the men’s 800m and breaking Grant Hackett’s Australian 800m record in a time of 7:37.76 along the way - clocking the fourth fastest time in history.
Hackett is in sixth and Ian Thorpe eighth in an impressive All-Time World List (see below).
While three Queenslanders Kaylee McKeown (58.03 -backstroke); Zac Stubblety-Cook (58.84 – breaststroke), and Shayna Jack (51.53) were joined by SA’s Matt Temple (50.63 – butterfly) to take silver for Australia in the Mixed 4x100m medley relay.
Jack’s freestyle split was her third fastest time from three relay swims that have all been inside the Top Ten Fastest 100m freestyle Times in history.
