Statement Regarding Spectators

22 September 2020

Last Thursday, 17th September, information was published outlining the information relating to spectators wishing to attend the 2020 McDonald’s Queensland SC Championships.

This information clearly outlined the process in place and the reasoning behind it. We have, and will continue to make, the best decisions we can as events are delivered.

The 2020 McDonald’s Queensland SC Championships is the first Championship level event this season and always brings together many families across the State. In working to the restrictions in place for spectators, the decision was made to maximise the use of the grandstand by offering seat ‘bundles’ with the goal of providing as many seats as possible for the parents/guardians/families of the swimmers competing.

Hence, we asked our members to work together, particularly amongst the club groups and wonderful friendships our sport creates, to enable the maximised use of the grandstand. The full information can be read here.

Nothing about resuming sport in a COVID landscape is easy and to be in a position to run events for our members is something we are very grateful for. Particularly when members of our neighbouring State Organisations are not afforded the same choices.

The workload in resuming events is unmatched to anything experienced in the past. Decisions are being made with deep consideration given to the multitude of factors involved in balancing the vast differences of individual circumstances across our membership.

We understand this is an imperfect system and acknowledge there is no alternative that would adequately appease all individual circumstances of the 1405 nominated swimmers. As such, there are many parents/guardians/family members who have missed out on the limited number of spectator tickets available.

However, it is the decision, numbers are limited, and we are not in a position to respond to complaints via social media, email or phone. Please be reminded of the Social Media Policy to which all engagement and activity is subject to.

There is an immense amount of work remaining over the next couple of days in preparation for the event and our staff are working long hours to ensure the event proceeds and the swimmers have the opportunity to race at a State Championship event.

As such, the phones are unlikely to be answered, however our admin inbox is closely monitored and we will endeavour to respond in a timely manner to all appropriate and necessary emails, with the priority being the event this weekend.

We’re excited to see the swimmers race this weekend and hope you are too. Let’s band together as a community in being thankful we live in Queensland where our swimmers are back racing. At all times we ask that people are kind and respectful in all interactions with Swimming Queensland staff and volunteers.
