Jack goes the Distance on Day Three

23 July 2019
Jack McLoughlin

In a cool 7:46.42 Jack McLoughlin sailed through the Men’s 800m Freestyle to shave 0.42 off his personal best and touch the wall first at the 2019 FINA World Swimming Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

Qualifying third-fastest, McLoughlin will swim out of lane three in tomorrow evening’s final.

Ariarne Titmus - WC2019

Swimming out of lane one, Mack Horton after starting strong, touched in 7:52.65 to finish 8th in the heat and 14th overall missing out on a place in tomorrow night’s final.

Continuing the success for the gold cap, Ariarne Titmus was back in the pool this morning for the Women’s 200m Freestyle. Due to line up next to Katie Ledecky for the heat, Ledecky was a late withdrawal as was Australian Emma McKeon.

In the final seeded heat of the morning, Titmus recorded a time of 1:56.34 to touch the wall first. The Tasmanian-born teenager led the pack home at the 150m mark after turning 0.51 ahead of 2017 World Champion Italy’s Federica Pellegrini. Titmus will now swim in tonight’s semi-final, qualifying third fastest 1.20 behind Olympic silver medallist Sarah Sjoestroem.

Matt Temple - 200m Fly WC

On his international debut swim, it was rookie Dolphin Matthew Temple who stormed home in this morning’s heats of the Men’s 200m Butterfly. Marking the first time the Nunawading swimmer donned the gold cap, Temple set a new personal best time when he touched the wall in 1:56.53, only 0.37 seconds behind Commonwealth Gold medallist Chad Le Clos.

Joining Temple in the pool this morning was team mate David Morgan. Swimming out of lane three, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist touched the wall in 1:56.90.

Both Temple and Morgan will progress through to this evening’s semi-finals.

Finals will get underway at 9:00pm AEST with Clyde Lewis competing in the Men’s 200m Freestyle, Kiah Melverton and Maddy Gough in the Women’s 1500m Freestyle, Minna Atherton and Kaylee McKeown in the Women’s 100m Backstroke and Mitch Larkin in the Men’s 100m Backstroke.
